An Indian Food Experience

March 5th, 2009

India, the land of a thousand dishes. Delivered hot and fresh via a bicycle.

The bicycle depicted in this photo is not an accurate representation of the actual bicycles used.

That’s the luxury many Indian middle class workers can afford.

For around $30 a month lunch is delivered from their home to work everyday for 6 days a week. The food couriers even pick up the dirty dishes and take them home at the end of the day.

There’s only one thing better than a home cooked meal - a meal cooked at home in India!

  1. These guys are called dabbawalas and re sometimes called Tiffin Wallahs as the ‘Tiffin’ is often noted as the container the food is ported in.

In colonial times, I believe it referred to a ‘light lunch’.

  2. We interviewed Chef BT, restaurantbt, in Tampa, FL and she told us how she takes a homemade, hot lunch to child every day at school. She is the exception.
There are emerging businesses that offer ‘homestyle’ cooking option but they aren’t the same.
Can you imagine the chaos if the above model was used in NYC or LA?
I think insulated lunch bags will once again rise to precipice of must haves.
